Electric Vehicle Point Types

There are 4 modes in which method to charge your electric vehicle:

  • Mode 1:

In this charging mode, you can provide energy either from single-phase or three-phase A.C  supply. You may use a simple charging cable without a control box. Basically this cable use a standard socket outlet like one you find in your home so this mode work either with a charging equipment or with a domestic outlet .

  • Mode 2:

This mode is the same than the first mode but using a different charging cable with an in-cable control box incorporating an RCD.

  • Mode 3:

This is the preffered solution in the long term. This charging point can either work with single phase or three phase installation for usually a 16 A or 32 A current. Mode 3 is the most common charger you could find. This Mode includes additional conductors in the charging cable for the communication between the vehicle and the charger. The communication has different functions like allowing you to know when the charging is finished, to follow the energy consuption or provide measures for off-peak charging and energy management this  is good for home installation

  • Mode 4:

In this mode the charging point converts A.C current in D.C directly (in the other charging modes the A.C current is converted by the Electric Vehicle EV) . It uses a tethered charging cable and a dedicated vehicle inlet and vehicle connector . As the current sent to the vehicle is D.C, the battery receives directly this current . This has a really fast charging time around 20 minutes.
